“Dirty Diana” is a hit song by singer Michael Jackson. The song presented a harder rock sound similar to that of “Beat It” from the album Thriller. It was the fifth and last number-one hit from the album Bad on the Billboard Hot 100. Jackson hired Billy Idol’s former guitarist Steve Stevens to back him on the track. There was a mystery for many years leading to some speculation as to what Jackson was talking about in the song and whether he was referring to his friend Diana Ross, or Princess Diana of the British Royal Family. On an interview from the special edition of Bad, Quincy Jones later confirmed that it was about groupies. The accompanying video was shot in early 1988 in front of a live audience. The video added some scenes of a woman walking through the streets at night to make it more serious. It probably portraits the ‘Diana’ that Jackson describes in the song. Jackson signals the end of each verse by doing his signature spin. At the end of the video, Jackson finishes the performance going to his limousine, only to find this woman called Diana inside. “Dirty Diana” was performed during later Bad World Tour concerts. According to Michael Jackson in an interview, this song was scheduled for a live 1988 performance at Wembley Stadium during the Bad World Tour; however, Michael felt the song would be an insult to Princess Diana, who was in attendance, so he had it removed. Diana informed him the song was actually one of her personal favourites, but by that stage it was too late to reinstate it for the show.
